January 31 & February 1, 2025

Friday & Saturday | 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The workshop is designed to have students create a colorful, flowing background that bursts with color.

Day 1:  Class starts with a demonstration on how to create a loose and flowing background around a sea turtle. Reneé will provide the turtle drawing for you to trace, if you like, and offer other possibilities of subject matter. We will be exploring color blends and values and how they relate to the subject. The background will be wet so another background painting can be created.

Day 2 :  Will focus on painting the actual turtle and beginning the second subject.

  • Renée Chastant’s Workshop Supplies List:

$5 Paper supply fee due on 1st day of workshop

I will bring quarter sheets [11x15”] of Arches 140 lb cold press so we’ll all have the same good paper

    • Please bring some extra watercolor paper, any sort, to practice color blends and/or practice critter eyes, etc. – this paper can be decent-sized scraps or the back of a “less successful” painting
    • A support board bigger than 11 x 15 – you’ll put this under your paper while you’re painting
      • I use a sheet of acrylic, just like is used for framing, or Corplast
      • You can use acrylic, Corplast, gator board… it has to be flat, non-absorbent and strong enough to transport a wet painting
      • I will bring some extra sheets of Corplast for those who need it
    • A 1-2 lb bag of spaghetti or similar item to give a tilt at the top of your support board
    • Lead pencil, 2H will work, plus a good eraser [I use a kneadable gray eraser]
    • Watercolors, any colors you like and as many as you like
    • Watercolor palette
    • Watercolor brushes – the biggest round and the biggest flat you have
      • Plus medium and small brushes, especially rounds and including a very small round – bring whatever you have
    • Water bucket/receptacle
